New Cover Songs & Why!

Well.....that's the goal anyway.

My plan is to learn 1 cover a day but sometimes a song will have tricky bits.  What do I mean by tricky bits? Oh you know...the fills, licks and riffs (Ooooo I think thats my next blog title...no seriously) that I am still learning to play.

So I just want to spice things up a bit so here's the list with a little blurb about why I choose the song. Also, these are in no particular order of preference. Here we go!
  • Fire & Rain by James Taylor: I didn't grow up listening to James Taylor, but I did work for a retailer that piped this song into the store 30 times a day.  But ultimately this cover by Johnathan Butler won me over and I said to myself "self....you need to learn it that way"!
  • Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison: I get this request a lot when I livestream and when I play out. So it made the list. Plus I don't want to seem like an ahole when I say "sorry, I don't know that one".
  • On Bended Knee (think I got the title right by Boyz ll Men): Once upon a time, I sang in a "boy band" called Kornerstone (Here is some of our music in case you need a dose of cheesy early 2000s late 90s RnB) and we modeled ourselves after this group. They were everything we wanted to be. Needless to say, I guess a little of that desire is still there. Don't judge me
  • Tennessee Whiskey by Chris Stapleton: Because why not. This song is the $hit and if I were a country singer, we'd be kindred spirits him and I. Sing it with ya chest!
  • Havana by Camila Cabello: Because I don't want to seem like I'm too out of touch with today's music?
  • Remember Me (Miguel's Version): This song is fiyah, but Ill probably improvise during the parts in Spanish. Or not...hmmmm..
  • Say You Won't Let Go by James Arthur: Blazin song and there's always room for a good ballad
  • Brown Sugar by D'Angelo: I think I spelled the name right but I loved this song back in the day. I still do, plus there are lots of falsetto parts I can play with as well. AND a little neo-soul never hurt nobody!
  • Could It Be by Jaheim: I've gotten this request from someone on Periscope a few times. I don't want to let her down when she finally comes out to a show....I got you! Plus, we have similar sound sooooo why not right?!
  • No Tears Left To Cry by Ariana Grande: I'm not sure why I like this song. She's an awesome singer but I haven't really paid her music any attention until this song. So I'm doing it but I'm not putting my hair up in a bun. I have none :-(
  • Girls Like You by Maroon 5: I don't know this song at all. I just googled "today's popular songs" and it came up. I heard 30 seconds of it on YouTube and added it to the list. We will see what happens with this one.
  • Ignition by R. Kelly: Another classic I listen to every now and then. Still bumps, the definition of a classic.
  • How Long by Charlie Puth: Another song I googled and put down on this list after a 30 second preview. His song "One Call A Way" I somtimes cover as well.
  • Purple Rain by Prince: I was hesitant to put this one down because the lead guitar along with so many other elements of play beyond my ability make this song a classic. Yet, I'm stepping out of my comfort zone and trying it my way. Stay tuned for this one.
  • Castle On The Hill by Ed Sheeran: Awesome songwriter and I also cover "Thinking Out Loud". I love the fact that he pays homage to his childhood friends. It's the type of song I've always wanted to write. So for now, Ill sing his.
  • Son Of A Preacher Man: So many people have covered this song but theres good reason for it. And when I can pinpoint said reason, Ill let you know. Sometimes you just feel it in your bones.
  • Let's Stay Together by Al Green: I hated this song as a kid and love it as an adult. His music along with so many of his time was the soundtrack of my childhood and has influenced my own style tremendously.
  • Nothing Left To Lose by Matt Kearney: Another song I am vaguely familar with but I don't really know it. Doesn't hurt to expand your musical tastes though.
  • Wagon Wheel, Darius Rucker version: I'm going to dedicate a whole vlog/blog (I haven't decided yet) on Darius Rucker but I get asked to cover this song a lot.  Might as well give the people what they want.

Stay tuned......Ill post clips of my progress.....mistakes and all *fist bumps for all*
